Beeston’s Mark Gleghorne is just one day away from his teams first game in this years Coal India Hockey India League. Gleghorne joined the Jaypee Punjab Warriors franchise once again this season playing alongside global hockey greats such as Sardar Singh (India), Mark Knowles (Australia), Robert Van Der Horst and Mink Van Der Weerden (Netherlands).
The Jaypee Punjab Warriors are owned by Jaiprakash Associates Ltd. and are based at the Hockey Stadium in Mohali, India. The team are coached by former Australian player and Olympic silver medalist (Montreal 1976), Barry Dancer. Having lost the final in 2014 and 2015 the Punjab Warriors struck gold last season beating Adam Dixon’s Kalinga Lancers in the final. The Punjab Warriors travel to Mumbai to face Dabang Mumbai on Friday evening at 7:00pm (1:30pm GMT).
Mark, Beeston’s top goalscorer this season, commented, “I’m really looking forward to defending our Hockey India League title this year. Getting rid of the ‘final jinx’ last year and beating the Kalinga Lancers in the final was extremely satisfying for the squad.”
The HIL competition concludes on the 26th February and Mark will return to Beeston for the second half of the outdoor season.
“We were pleased with the majority our results before Christmas and our aim now is to get to the play-offs and win the Championship. We have some fantastic talent in the squad at Beeston and there is absolutely no reason we cannot win that Championship.”
