In 2020, Gareth Griffiths, a lifelong Beeston Bee, playing for the men’s first team and the Great Britain Elite Development Programme, set up a flyerz hockey section of the club with the aim of adopting more Beeston Bees with additional needs into our hockey family.
Flyerz Hockey is the name given to grassroots, disability-inclusive hockey in Great Britain. During lockdown, the sessions were held on Zoom, but, with the return of grassroots hockey, the sessions are back at Beeston Hockey Club, and bigger than ever before.
The sessions would not be possible without the support of an army of volunteers from Beeston’s coaches, including Gareth Griffiths, Ayush Isaac, Cellan Griffiths and Ruby Apoola, the Nottingham Medics Hockey Club, and Helen Coppins from the Nottinghamshire Down’s Syndrome Support Group, and we’re incredibly grateful for everyone’s support.
Gareth Griffiths, Flyerz co-ordinator and men’s first team player said:
Our sessions every Monday are the highlight of my week. They’re such a fantastic group of young people, and I’m so proud to call them Beeston Bees. Our Flyerz sessions are completely inclusive, so if you’re interested in joining, we’d love to see you.
We’re always looking for more Beeston Bees to join our Flyerz section. Our sessions run every Monday from 5pm-6pm. If you’re interested in joining, please click here to register your interest.
