This Sunday, Nottingham Hockey Centre will be hosting the Nottinghamshire Women’s Shield Final, where home team Beeston 6th XI will take on Worksop 3rd XI for the coveted title. The road to the final has seen 3 matches fiercely fought by a hybrid yet harmonised squad of players from the Ladies’ 6th and 7th teams, valiantly led by captain Jo Illingworth and coached by Sue Moore.
The last time our home team saw silverware was during the 2013/14 season, when the 6s won their league and regained their rightful place in Division 2. Coupled with the 7s narrowly missing out on the Division 3 title last weekend, emotions will undoubtedly be running high this weekend.
In readiness, Beeston are making their final preparations this week for what is certain to be an exciting finale to their 2016/17 season. In the run up, some dedicated supporters will have both experienced great highs from watching the goal heavy 6-0 win against Nottingham Trent University 2 on a freezing December morning to the nail biting extra minutes against Newark 3, where, after a goalless game, the goal keeping prowess of Hannah Cliffe helped put Beeston in the best position to take their 2-1 victory on penalty flicks.
Sue Moore commented on the how well the squad has come together and benefited from the mixed skills sets each of the players involved bring to the game, “The shield squad consists of both junior and more senior players and it’s been great to see them all work so well together, encouraging each other to play their best but also remembering to have fun!”.
Captain Jo Illingworth added, “After reaching the final last year, along with all the hard work we have put in this season, it would be amazing to take home the trophy – and with it being played on home turf it would be brilliant to get as many home supporters down to give us that extra boost”.
Push back is at 10am on the sand-dressed pitch, let’s get behind the Bees and bring it home. C’mon you Bees!
