HIGHFIELDS SPORTS CLUB CELEBRATIONS - 19th May 2012.

It was celebration time at Highfields on Saturday as the Sports Club opened its new sand dressed pitch. The new surface was manufactuered in Belgium and installed by the Nottingham based company, Astrosport.  The pitch will be used for hockey, football training and lacrosse.

The day started with a Beeston Centurions Football Club event and was followed by junior hockey matches hosted by Beeston HC and Nottingham Players HC.

There were speeches by Highfields Sports Club Chairman, David Griffiths;  Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Gordon Asher;  the Sheriff of Nottingham, Merlita Bryan; and presentation of trophies by the Chairman of the County Council, Carol Pepper.

The pitch was opened by project partners, Alex Teasdale, from England Hockey Board and Tony Billson from the National Hockey Foundation. In attendance was Great Britain goalkeeper, George Pinner.

Beeston H.C. then celebrated 20 years of National League hockey with an exhibition match against former players who played in the European Cup Winners squad of 1999. The current Beeston team won the game 6-3.

Beeston and Nottingham Players HC rounded off the day with a thrilling mixed hockey match which ended in a 3-3 draw. All the players involved in the event praised the new surface which is a state-of-the-art pitch which plays like a water based pitch.  Tony Dockerill, Nottingham Players HC Chairman stated, “The new pitch is wonderful, our players are delighted with the quality of the surface.”

David Griffiths invited the assembled throng to go back into the club where plans for future development on the site were on show.  Highfields Sports Club have exciting plans to build a new hockey pitch, and, to construct an indoor hall and stands around the main pitch.

David, added, “Our aim is to bring major international and European hockey into the city. Highfields is here to support the numerous clubs based here.  Beeston Hockey Club are rapidly outgrowing the facility so it is important that we invest in bigger and better facilities. There is an opportunity to bring EuroHockey League and International hockey in to Nottingham, which in turn, will have huge economical benefits. We are looking for potential partners to help bring 'The Dream' to fruition."

Graham Griffiths, the Beeston Manager, commented, “The plan known as “the Dream” is ambitious and exciting.  Beeston are now established as a top 8 side in Europe and are a leading outdoor and indoor premier club. We want to bring EuroHockey League matches into England and we need training facilities for our indoor squads. “The Dream” would establish Nottingham as the major hockey venue in the country and we hope to work closely with the City Council and England Hockey Board to turn the Dream into reality.”
